Otium
A laid-back city builder set in Augustan Rome. Pixel art, no crises.
What it is
You are a retired legionary founding a colonia in a river valley. No fires, no plague, no bankruptcy: things only get nicer.
A well, a market fed by a farm and a shrine within walking reach keep families content, and huts grow into domus and grand domus as their wants are met. Content days earn dignitas, which carries the town through the ranks: Municipium, Urbs and Splendida.
The year is the Roman one: 365 days and thirteen festivals, each on its own date and kept its own way. Families are born, marry, inherit, rise and fall, and write letters home.
How it works
- Buildings are MagicaVoxel models, rendered to an isometric pixel-art sprite atlas.
- The simulation runs deterministically in a Web Worker, so the page stays smooth while the town lives.
- The town saves itself in the browser. Sign in with an email to keep it in the cloud and share it by link, where a visitor can leave half a tessera at the door.
- It plays on a phone too: a tap aims, and a button places.
